Maths or Further Maths:
which is right for your child?
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics and Further Mathematics sit side by side on many timetables, but they serve very different purposes. This page breaks down the syllabus, the exam format, and the monthly cost so you can make a confident, informed decision.

Which mathematics programme fits your goals?
The right choice depends on your child's current level, their intended university pathway, and how much curriculum space is available in their timetable. Here's what each programme is designed to do.
IGCSE Mathematics: the essential qualification
IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is the core qualification that virtually every secondary student in the Cambridge curriculum completes. It provides the mathematical literacy required for further study across sciences, economics, geography, and computing. Universities and employers across the GCC and internationally recognise it as a standard benchmark.
- Syllabus 0580, examined by Cambridge
- Core tier (grades C to G) and Extended tier (grades A* to E)
- Required for most A-Level science and maths pathways
- Live lessons from AED 500/month at DIS
- 100+ qualified instructors, GCC-based
IGCSE Further Mathematics: for high-attaining students
IGCSE Further Mathematics (0606) is an optional extension subject for students who excel in 0580 and want to build the skills needed for A-Level Mathematics and A-Level Further Mathematics. It's not a replacement for 0580. It's taken alongside it, and it signals mathematical maturity to universities and sixth-form admissions teams.
- Syllabus 0606, untiered, Cambridge examined
- Bridges IGCSE and A-Level Mathematics content
- Ideal preparation for A-Level 9709 and 9231
- Available at DIS from AED 500/month
- Proprietary LMS with live lessons and resource library
What does each syllabus actually cover?
IGCSE Mathematics (0580) covers the core number, algebra, geometry, and statistics that all Cambridge students need. IGCSE Further Mathematics (0606) adds matrices, vectors, functions, calculus foundations, and combinatorics on top of that foundation. It's a significant step up in abstraction.
- 0580: number, algebra, shape, space, statistics
- 0606: matrices, vectors, calculus intro, permutations
- Both assessed by Cambridge International Examinations
- 0606 requires strong prior attainment in 0580
- A-Level 9231 extends pure, mechanics, and statistics
How is each subject examined?
Cambridge structures each exam carefully. IGCSE Mathematics has a tiered entry (Core and Extended). IGCSE Further Mathematics is untiered and sits entirely at the Extended level. A-Level Further Mathematics splits across pure and applied components. Knowing the format early means students can practise the right paper style from day one.
- 0580: Paper 1, 2, 3, 4 (Core and Extended tiers)
- 0606: Paper 1 and Paper 2, untiered
- 9231: Papers 1, 2, 3, 4 (pure plus applied)
Maths vs Further Maths: what actually differs?
Both subjects follow Cambridge syllabuses and are assessed by written examinations. The key differences sit in scope, entry requirements, and how universities read each qualification on a personal statement.
