IB MYP Mathematics: what parents should know.
The IB Middle Years Programme Mathematics course builds conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills in students aged 11 to 16, across MYP Years 1 to 5. It feeds directly into the IB Diploma Programme.
IB MYP Mathematics is a five-year programme for students in Years 1 to 5 of the Middle Years Programme. It is organised into four branches: number, algebra, geometry and statistics, spanning both standard and extended pathways.
Students are assessed against four criteria: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Each criterion is scored on a 0 to 8 scale, giving a maximum of 32 points per subject.
Assessment is ongoing throughout each MYP year, with schools setting internal tasks aligned to IB criteria. In MYP Year 5, students may also sit eAssessment exams set externally by the IB, typically at the end of the academic year.
A group class cannot do this.
Lessons built around the gaps
The tutor identifies exactly which MYP criterion or topic is holding the grade back and builds the session around closing that gap.
Criterion-based technique built in
Every session practises responses to the exact MYP assessment criteria, so students learn how to communicate their working in the way the mark scheme rewards.
Parents kept in the loop
After each lesson, parents receive a short progress note covering what was covered, what improved, and what the next session will target.
A rigorous five-year framework built for curious, globally minded students.
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme is a five-year curriculum framework for students aged 11 to 16. It is set by the IB organisation and taught in authorised IB World Schools across the GCC and internationally.
Mathematics in the MYP is assessed internally against four criteria, each scored out of 8. Schools report final grades on a 1 to 7 scale. In MYP Year 5, students may also take externally set eAssessment papers for an official IB certificate.
Tuitional tutors follow the exact MYP Mathematics guide your child's school uses, whether they are on the standard or extended pathway, so every session maps directly to the tasks and criteria their teacher is marking.
What a one-to-one IB MYP Mathematics lesson actually looks like.
Every session follows a four-phase structure: recap, teach, apply, and review. Each phase is purposeful, so no time is wasted and the student leaves with something concrete.

- 0-5 min
Recap and quick diagnostic
The tutor opens by reviewing the previous session's homework and asking two or three quick questions to identify any lingering gaps before moving forward.
Example: The student is asked to sketch a linear function and identify its gradient and y-intercept, checking whether the concept from the last session has stuck.
- 5-25 min
Teach the target topic
The tutor introduces or deepens understanding of the session's focus topic, using worked examples and asking the student to explain their reasoning aloud to strengthen Criterion C communication skills.
Example: Exploring systems of linear equations using substitution and elimination, then connecting the algebra to a real-world context to satisfy Criterion D (applying mathematics in real-life contexts).
- 25-50 min
Apply it to MYP-style tasks
The student works through criterion-aligned practice tasks, mirroring the format their school uses for internal assessments. The tutor guides without giving answers, building the independent reasoning the IB rewards.
Example: Completing a Criterion B investigation task on number patterns, writing a structured conjecture and testing it with examples, matching the style of a real MYP Year 4 internal assessment.
- 50-60 min
Review, set homework, report
The tutor summarises progress against the session's criterion focus, sets a targeted homework task, and logs notes for the parent report sent after the session ends.
Example: Homework set to complete a short Criterion A task on solving quadratic equations, with a mark-scheme guide so the student can self-assess before the next session.
After the lesson
Parents receive a written progress note covering the criterion practised, what the student did well, and where more work is needed. Session recordings and homework resources are available in the platform for the student to revisit at any time.

The five-year programme that builds real mathematical thinking.
IB MYP Mathematics is set by the International Baccalaureate for students aged 11 to 16 across MYP Years 1 to 5. It runs on two pathways, standard and extended, and is assessed internally through criterion-based tasks throughout each year.
Assessment focuses on four criteria: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying maths in real life. Students who complete MYP Year 5 may sit IB eAssessment exams for an internationally recognised certificate before entering the Diploma Programme.
Why families across the GCC trust Tuitional for IB MYP.
My son struggled with Criterion B investigations for months. His Tuitional tutor broke the process down so clearly that he started enjoying the problem-solving side of MYP Maths. His internal assessment scores improved noticeably within six weeks.
Scheduling around our shifts was always our worry. Tuitional made it easy to book sessions on evenings and weekends, and the tutor was always prepared. We finally feel like we have the right support in place.
I used to dread the investigating patterns criterion because I never knew how to structure my response. After just a few sessions I understood exactly what the IB was looking for and felt so much more confident.
We moved from Riyadh to Sharjah mid-year and my daughter barely missed a session. The online format meant her tutor continued without any disruption and her grades stayed on track through the transition.
IB MYP Mathematics tutoring: your questions, answered.
The things parents and students ask us most, in plain language.
?What is the difference between MYP standard and extended Maths?+
MYP Mathematics Extended covers additional topics and greater depth than the standard pathway, preparing students more directly for IB Diploma Mathematics courses at Higher Level. Your child's school decides which pathway they follow, usually based on ability and intended DP route.
?How are MYP Mathematics assessments marked?+
MYP Mathematics is marked against four criteria: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Each criterion is scored out of 8 by the class teacher. Schools then convert the total into a final grade on the IB 1 to 7 scale.
?Can a tutor help with MYP internal assessment tasks?+
Yes. Tutors can help your child understand the criteria, plan their approach, and practise the skills needed for each task type. They do not complete the task for the student, but they do build the investigative and communication skills the IB assessment rewards.
?How quickly can we get started with an IB MYP Maths tutor?+
Most families are matched with a tutor and have their first session booked within one to two working days of getting in touch. The trial session lets you see the tutor's approach before committing to regular lessons.
?Does the tutor follow my child's school syllabus?+
Yes. Before sessions begin, the tutor reviews your child's current unit, upcoming assessments, and which pathway they are on. Every session is aligned to the MYP Mathematics guide their school follows, so nothing taught in the lesson conflicts with what the class teacher expects.
?What happens if the first tutor is not the right fit?+
If the first pairing does not feel right, Tuitional offers a free re-match. You simply let the team know and they will select a different tutor whose style and experience better suit your child, at no extra cost.
