What does the digital SAT look like?

Total testing time is 2 hours and 14 minutes, plus a 10-minute break between sections. The Bluebook app works both online and offline.
According to the College Board, the SAT became fully digital in spring 2024. The 2026 format has not changed from the version launched that year.

Reading and Writing section
This section has 54 questions, with 27 in each module. Every question comes with its own short passage or passage pair. There are no long reading blocks to work through.

Math section

Math gives about 24 more seconds per question than Reading and Writing. Students should use timed practice to build comfort with both pacing speeds.
The 10-minute break comes only between the Reading and Writing section and the Math section. There is no break between Module 1 and Module 2 within the same section.
Students cannot return to a completed module or skip ahead. Time is enforced per module by the Bluebook app. Once a module closes, those answers are final.

How does adaptive routing affect scores?
The SAT uses multistage adaptive testing. Your performance on Module 1 of each section determines whether Module 2 is harder or easier. Routing into the harder Module 2 gives access to the upper score range, roughly 600 to 800 per section.
The easier Module 2 caps your score ceiling lower. But both module paths still allow a range of scores. You are not locked into a specific number based on routing alone.
Module 1 in each section contains a calibrated mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. It serves as the baseline that determines your Module 2 path.
Only two possible Module 2 paths exist per section. One is harder, one is easier. This is not a granular sliding scale with many levels.
