About the qualification

What every parent should know about IB DP Economics.

IB DP Economics is a rigorous two-year course for students aged 16 to 19. It combines microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, and development economics, assessed through both external exams and an internal commentary portfolio.

What it is

IB DP Economics is offered at Standard Level and Higher Level within the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. It develops analytical thinking and real-world application, preparing students for university economics, business, and social science pathways.

How it is graded

Students are graded on a 1 to 7 scale. Assessment combines two external written exam papers with an internal assessment portfolio of three economics commentaries. Higher Level students sit an additional Paper 3 quantitative methods paper.

When exams happen

IB exams are held in two annual sessions: May and November. Most DP students sit the May session in their second year. Internal assessment commentaries are submitted earlier, so preparation for those begins well before the final exam season.

Why one-to-one

A group class cannot cover this.

Lessons built around the real gaps

Your tutor identifies the exact topics holding your child back and builds every session around those, whether it's market failures, exchange rate theory, or Paper 3 quantitative methods.

Real IB past-paper technique

Sessions include timed practice on actual IB past papers, with mark-scheme walkthroughs so your child learns exactly how to earn each mark band.

Parents kept fully in the loop

After every session, you receive detailed tutor notes, a progress summary, and the homework set, so you always know where your child stands.

What is IB DP Economics?

Two years of rigorous economics study that opens top university doors.

IB DP Economics is part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, set by the IB Organisation. Designed for students aged 16 to 19, it is taught at Standard Level and Higher Level in international schools across the GCC and worldwide.

Assessment combines two external exam papers at SL and three at HL, plus an internal portfolio of three economics commentaries. Grades run from 1 to 7, with a 7 representing the highest level of achievement across all components.

Every Tuitional lesson follows the student's exact IB syllabus section, whether Standard or Higher Level, so past-paper practice, commentary writing, and command-term technique all align precisely with what their school and the IB examiner expects.

Inside a lesson

What a one-to-one IB DP Economics lesson actually looks like.

Every session follows a tested four-phase structure: recap, teach, apply, and review. Each phase has a clear purpose so no minute of the hour is wasted.

Book a trial lesson

A typical 60-minute session

  1. 0-5 min

    Recap and quick diagnostic

The tutor opens with two or three targeted questions from the previous session to check retention and spot any lingering misunderstandings before moving forward.

Example: The tutor asks the student to sketch a production possibility curve and explain opportunity cost, checking whether last week's scarcity topic has been retained.

  2. 5-25 min

    Teach the target topic

The tutor explains the session's focus concept using diagrams, real-world examples, and command-term definitions drawn directly from the IB Economics guide.

Example: Covering Section 2.3 (Costs of production), the tutor draws short-run cost curves live, labels fixed and variable costs, and explains why average total cost is U-shaped, linking to IB mark-scheme language.

  3. 25-50 min

    Apply it to past-paper questions

The student attempts real IB past-paper questions under timed conditions while the tutor observes, then walks through the mark scheme to show exactly how marks are awarded.

Example: The student works through a Paper 1 (a) question on price elasticity of demand from a past May exam, then the tutor compares the response against the markband descriptors for 2 and 4 marks.

  4. 50-60 min

    Review, set homework, report

The tutor summarises what was covered, sets a focused homework task, and logs session notes that are sent to the parent immediately after the call.

Example: Homework is set to write a 150-word commentary extract on a current news article about a government subsidy, practising internal assessment structure ahead of the submission deadline.

After the lesson

Parents receive tutor notes, a short progress summary, and the homework task within minutes of the session ending. Recordings are stored on the platform and accessible at any time for the student to review.

Parent Reviews

Why families across the GCC trust Tuitional for IB Economics.

My son was really struggling with Paper 1 essay technique and the internal assessment commentaries. His Tuitional tutor broke everything down, worked through real past papers with him, and now he actually understands how the mark bands work. His confidence has completely turned around.

We were worried about finding a tutor who truly knew the IB syllabus rather than just general economics. Tuitional matched us perfectly. The tutor is thorough, punctual, and always sends notes after every session. Exactly what we needed.

I went from a 4 to a 6 in IB Economics after just two months of tutoring. The sessions are structured and focused. My tutor always brings past-paper questions and explains exactly what the examiner wants to see. Really different from my school lessons.

Scheduling was easy and completely flexible around school and activities. Within a few sessions, the commentary writing process finally made sense to my daughter. Her teacher even commented on the improvement in her work.

Your questions answered

IB DP Economics tutoring, your questions answered.

The things parents and students ask us most, in plain language.

?What does an IB DP Economics tutor actually cover?+

Tutors cover all four IB Economics sections: microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, and development economics. They also support internal assessment commentary writing and past-paper exam technique for Paper 1, Paper 2, and the HL Paper 3 quantitative methods component.

?Can tutoring help with the IB Economics internal assessment?+

Yes. Tutors guide students through selecting a suitable news article, applying the correct economic theory, drawing accurate diagrams, and structuring the commentary to meet IB marking criteria. Support covers all three required commentaries across the course.

?Do you tutor both SL and HL IB Economics?+

Yes, Tuitional tutors work with both Standard Level and Higher Level students. HL sessions include additional focus on Paper 3 quantitative methods, which requires practice with specific calculation techniques not assessed at SL.

?How often should my child have IB Economics tutoring sessions?+

Most IB students benefit from one or two sessions per week. During commentary deadlines or in the lead-up to the May or November exam series, some families increase to three sessions to cover past papers and final revision intensively.

?Are the tutors familiar with the current IB Economics syllabus?+

All Tuitional tutors are trained on the current IB Economics guide and assessment criteria. They are familiar with the command terms, markband descriptors, and the specific diagram and evaluation requirements the IB examiner uses to award marks.

?How do I get started with an IB DP Economics tutor?+
