About the qualification

Cambridge IGCSE Religious Studies: what to know.

Cambridge IGCSE Religious Studies is a CAIE qualification that develops students' understanding of world religions, ethical thinking, and textual analysis. It builds critical reasoning skills valued by universities and employers alike.

What it is

Cambridge IGCSE Religious Studies (syllabus 0490) is an internationally recognised qualification for students aged 14 to 16. It examines beliefs, practices, and moral issues across major world religions, preparing students for further study along the Cambridge pathway.

How it is graded

The qualification is graded A* to G. Assessment is entirely written examination, with no coursework component. Students must demonstrate knowledge of religious teachings, apply ethical reasoning, and evaluate arguments clearly, making exam technique central to a strong grade.

When exams happen

CAIE runs two exam series each year, in May/June and October/November. Most IGCSE students sit the May/June series at the end of Year 11. Preparation typically begins 12 to 18 months before the first paper to allow thorough syllabus coverage.

Why one-to-one

A group class can't do this.

Aimed at weak evaluation questions

Most students can describe a belief and cannot evaluate one, which is the difference between the lower and the upper levels of the mark scheme.

Response levels, explained

Twelve-mark questions are planned, written to the clock, then levelled aloud so the student hears the reasoning behind it.

The update carries the question attempted, the level the answer actually reached, and exactly what would have lifted it one band higher.

What is IGCSE Religious Studies?

The qualification that builds critical thinking for life beyond school.

Cambridge IGCSE Religious Studies (syllabus 0490) is set by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE). It is designed for students aged 14 to 16 and is taught in international schools across the GCC and worldwide.

Assessment is through written examinations graded A* to G. Papers test knowledge of religious beliefs and practices, ethical arguments, and scriptural texts. Strong answers require structured reasoning and precise use of religious vocabulary alongside a clear mark-scheme awareness.

Tuitional tutors work directly from the 0490 syllabus your child's school follows, covering every topic and question type on the real papers. Nothing drifts from the actual exam, so preparation stays focused and efficient.

Inside a lesson

What a one-to-one Religious Studies lesson actually looks like.

Sixty minutes in four parts: check, teach, write, mark. The written phase is never skipped, because evaluation technique is a skill that improves through repetition.

Book a trial lesson

A typical 60-minute session

  1. 0-5 min

    Recap and quick diagnostic

The tutor opens with two or three quick questions on the previous topic to check retention and immediately spot any remaining gaps before moving forward.

Example: The student explains the Islamic concept of Tawhid in their own words, and the tutor notes any misconceptions to address during the session.

  2. 5-25 min

    Teach the day's content

The tutor introduces the session's focus topic using the CAIE syllabus structure, breaking down key beliefs, key terms, and how examiners expect them to be used.

Example: Covering Unit 1 of syllabus 0490, the tutor explains Christian teachings on the nature of God, with annotated notes the student builds live on-screen.

  3. 25-50 min

    Write one timed evaluation answer

The student attempts real CAIE past-paper questions under timed conditions. The tutor then reviews the answers against the mark scheme, explaining exactly how marks are awarded.

Example: The student answers a 12-mark evaluation question from a past June paper on the problem of evil, then the tutor walks through the levels-of-response mark scheme.

  4. 50-60 min

    Level it, set homework

The tutor summarises what was covered, sets a targeted homework task, and logs session notes. A progress report is sent to the parent the same day.

Example: Homework is to write a full 12-mark response on Christian ethical teachings, using the mark-scheme structure practised in the session.

After the lesson

The report names the topic taught, the level the timed answer reached against the published descriptors, and the essay set for the coming week. Recordings are worth replaying when a student wants to hear a mark scheme applied aloud.

Parent Feedback

Why families across the GCC trust Tuitional for IGCSE tutoring.

My daughter was really struggling with the ethics papers in IGCSE Religious Studies. After just a few sessions with her Tuitional tutor, she understood how to structure her arguments properly and her confidence in the subject completely transformed. She went from a C to an A in her mocks.

FAQs

IGCSE Religious Studies tutoring: your questions answered.

What parents tend to ask us before booking a lesson.

?Which syllabus does the IGCSE Religious Studies tutor follow?+

Tutors work from Cambridge IGCSE Religious Studies syllabus 0490. Before lessons begin, your tutor confirms the exact syllabus code and option your child's school uses, so every session maps directly to the papers they will sit.

?How is Cambridge IGCSE Religious Studies assessed?+

Assessment is entirely through written examinations. There is no coursework. Papers test knowledge of religious beliefs, ethical reasoning, and textual understanding. Examiners use a levels-of-response mark scheme, so structured argument and precise use of religious vocabulary are essential.

?When should my child start IGCSE Religious Studies tutoring?+

Starting 12 to 18 months before the exam series gives the most flexibility for full syllabus coverage. Students who begin closer to exams can still make strong progress, with sessions focused on high-priority topics and past-paper technique.

?Can tutoring help if my child finds the essay questions difficult?+

Yes. Structuring extended responses is one of the most common areas students need support with in Religious Studies. Tutors teach the levels-of-response framework and practise past-paper essay questions every session until the structure becomes second nature.

?Are sessions truly one-to-one or are they in a group?+

Every session is strictly one-to-one. Tuitional does not offer group lessons. Your child works directly with a single specialist tutor in a live video session, with the full lesson focused on their individual syllabus gaps and target grade.

?How much does IGCSE Religious Studies tutoring cost?+

Religious Studies is priced as a standard IGCSE subject, starting at AED 50 hourly. Essay marking between lessons is included rather than charged extra, and buying a block lowers the rate. Current figures are on the packages page.
