What every parent should know about IB MYP Design.
IB MYP Design is a compulsory MYP subject for students aged 11 to 16. It combines creative thinking with technical problem-solving across digital and product design contexts.
IB MYP Design sits within the Middle Years Programme and develops students' ability to apply a design cycle to real-world challenges. It covers both digital design and product design pathways depending on the school.
MYP Design is judged on four criteria: Inquiring and Analysing, Developing Ideas, Creating the Solution, and Evaluating. Schools mark internally against IB-standardised rubrics, with the IB moderating the results.
Assessment is ongoing throughout each unit rather than in a single end-of-year exam. Final MYP eAssessment for Design may apply in Year 5 depending on the school's participation in the MYP eAssessment programme.
A group class can't do this.
Lessons built around the design cycle gaps
Your tutor pinpoints exactly which criterion is losing your child marks and rebuilds that stage of the design cycle from the ground up.
Real criterion-specific technique
Each session uses real MYP mark schemes and rubric descriptors, so your child learns precisely what the IB expects at each achievement level.
Parents kept in the loop
After every session you get a written update covering the criterion worked on, what improved, and what the next lesson will target.
The IB programme that builds design thinking for life.
IB MYP Design is a subject within the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, designed for students aged 11 to 16. It teaches the design cycle through both digital and product design contexts across all five MYP years.
Assessment uses four IB criteria assessed internally by the school and moderated by the IB. Achievement levels run from 0 to 8 per criterion, giving a total out of 32. Strong marks support progression into the IB Diploma Programme.
Every Tuitional MYP Design lesson follows the specific unit your child's school is running, using the same design cycle language and criteria descriptors their teacher uses, so nothing taught in a session ever conflicts with school work.
What a one-to-one IB MYP Design lesson actually looks like.
Every session follows four tested phases: review the design cycle stage, teach the target skill, apply it to a real criterion task, then review and plan. Each phase has a clear purpose.

- 0-5 min
Recap and quick diagnostic
The tutor reviews the student's latest design task or teacher feedback, works out which criterion is underperforming, and sets the session's focus.
Example: reviewing teacher comments on a Criterion B (Developing Ideas) design specification to spot where justification of decisions was too thin.
- 5-25 min
Teach the target criterion skill
The tutor spells out exactly what the IB rubric expects at the level the student is targeting, using the IB's own achievement-level descriptors as the guide.
Example: unpacking Criterion C (Creating the Solution) achievement level 7-8 descriptors to show what a fully justified, iterative making record looks like.
- 25-50 min
Apply it to a real criterion task
The student drafts or redrafts a real section of their current design task while the tutor gives live feedback against the mark scheme.
Example: rewriting a Criterion A (Inquiring and Analysing) research section to include explicit identification of the design problem, existing products, and client needs.
- 50-60 min
Review, set tasks, send report
The tutor summarises what improved, sets a specific task to finish before the next session, and sends a written report to the parent.
Example: task set to complete a first full annotated design sketch for Criterion B ahead of the next lesson.
After the lesson
You receive a written session report covering the criterion worked on, what the student improved, the task set for next time, and a note on the next session's focus. Session recordings are available to review at any time.

The subject that turns creative thinking into assessed, transferable skills.
IB MYP Design is set by the International Baccalaureate and runs across all five Middle Years Programme years. It is assessed through four criteria using achievement levels, with school-based tasks moderated by the IB.
MYP Design covers the full design cycle: inquiring, developing ideas, creating a solution, and evaluating outcomes. Strong performance builds directly towards the IB Diploma Programme and university design or technology pathways.
Why families across the GCC trust Tuitional for IB MYP Design.
My son had no idea how to write a proper design specification. After six sessions with his Tuitional tutor he submitted his Criterion A task and his teacher commented it was one of the strongest in the class. The improvement was genuinely remarkable.
The tutor explained the IB criteria in a way the school never did. My daughter finally understood what 'justifying design decisions' actually means, and her confidence in Design has completely changed.
I used to find the design cycle really confusing. My tutor broke it into simple steps and showed me exactly what the rubric wanted. I went up two achievement levels in Criterion C.
Scheduling was so easy around our working week. We found a slot on Thursday evenings and the tutor has been consistent every session. My son's MYP Design grade jumped noticeably after just one month.
IB MYP Design tutoring, your questions answered.
The things parents and students ask us most, in plain language.
?What does an IB MYP Design tutor actually help with?+
An IB MYP Design tutor helps your child understand and apply the four assessment criteria: Inquiring and Analysing, Developing Ideas, Creating the Solution, and Evaluating. Sessions focus on whatever criterion the student's current unit demands, using the IB rubric as the guide.
?Is MYP Design assessed by exams or coursework?+
MYP Design is assessed through coursework tasks completed during the school year, not by a single end-of-year exam. Teachers assess each task against four IB criteria, and the IB moderates the school's marks. A Tuitional tutor works directly on those tasks.
?My child's school uses a different design unit. Can you still help?+
Yes. MYP Design criteria and the design cycle are the same regardless of which unit topic the school chooses. Your tutor works from the actual task brief and teacher feedback your child brings to the session, so every lesson is relevant.
?When should we start MYP Design tutoring?+
The earlier the better, but most families start when a unit task has been set and the deadline is approaching. Starting at the beginning of a unit gives the most time to build strong criterion responses. Mid-unit support is equally common and effective.
?Can tutoring help with both digital design and product design pathways?+
Yes. Tuitional tutors cover both pathways. When you book, simply let us know which pathway your child's school follows and we will match them to a tutor with direct experience of that specific context.
?How many sessions does my child need for MYP Design?+
That depends on the unit length, the number of criteria in the task, and how much support is needed. Many families book one session per week for the duration of a unit. Your tutor will recommend a plan after the first session.
