About the qualification

OCR A Level Latin: what every parent should know.

OCR A Level Latin is a rigorous two-year qualification set by Oxford, Cambridge and RSA. It develops advanced skills in language, literature and Roman history, assessed through written examinations.

What it is

OCR A Level Latin is a post-16 qualification for students who want to study Latin at depth. It combines unseen translation, set texts in Latin, and a prose composition or comprehension component, leading to a full A Level grade.

How it is graded

OCR grades A Level Latin on a scale from A* to E. Assessment is entirely examination-based, with no coursework component. Mark schemes reward accurate translation, literary analysis, and command of Latin grammar across separate written papers.

When exams happen

OCR A Level Latin exams are sat in the May and June series at the end of Year 13. Most students begin focused revision and past-paper practice in the preceding autumn and spring terms to build confidence before the summer sitting.

Why one-to-one

A group class can't do this.

Lessons built around the gaps

The tutor pinpoints exactly which grammar constructions or set-text passages are capping your child's grade and teaches to those points directly.

Real past-paper technique

Every lesson includes timed translation or prose work from genuine OCR past papers, with mark-scheme feedback so your child knows precisely how to score.

Parents kept in the loop

After each session you get a short progress note covering what was covered, what improved, and what the next lesson will target.

What is OCR A Level Latin?

A rigorous literary and language qualification for post-16 students.

OCR A Level Latin is set by the OCR exam board and taken by students in Years 12 and 13. It combines translation of unseen Latin prose and verse with detailed study of set literary texts and Roman civilisation.

The qualification is graded A* to E across written examination papers only. Papers cover unseen translation, set texts including prose authors and verse, and either prose composition or a language paper, each carrying a defined weighting in the mark scheme.

Every lesson follows the exact OCR syllabus code your school uses, so work on Virgil, Cicero, or Tacitus aligns directly with the passages your child will face in the real examination.

What a one-to-one OCR A Level Latin lesson actually looks like

Every session follows a tested four-phase structure: recap prior work, teach the target topic, apply it to real OCR questions, then review and plan ahead. Sessions are focused, not rushed.

Book a trial lesson

A typical 60-minute session

  1. 0-5 min

    Recap and quick diagnostic

The tutor revisits last session's focus point and asks two or three quick questions to confirm the concept has stuck before moving forward.

Example: The tutor asks the student to translate three lines from Virgil's Aeneid Book 2 (a set text passage) to check whether indirect statement constructions are secure.

  2. 5-25 min

    Teach the target topic

The tutor explains the new grammar point or literary concept clearly, using annotated text and worked examples drawn directly from the OCR set texts or unseen passages.

Example: Teaching the use of the gerundive of obligation in Cicero's pro Milone, with the tutor annotating the Latin text live on the shared whiteboard.

  3. 25-50 min

    Apply it to past-paper questions

The student attempts timed questions from genuine OCR A Level Latin past papers while the tutor observes, then they work through the mark scheme together to understand exactly where marks are awarded.

Example: Working through an OCR Paper 1 unseen translation extract (prose), then reviewing the published mark scheme to identify where translation choices gain or lose marks.

  4. 50-60 min

    Review, set homework, report

The tutor recaps what was covered, sets a focused homework task, and logs the session notes so the parent receives a progress update within the hour.

Example: Homework set to prepare a written translation of a 20-line unseen prose passage for self-checking against a model answer before the next session.

After the lesson

You receive a parent report covering what was taught, how your child performed and what comes next — and homework is set in the portal with a due date before the next session.

Parent Feedback

Why families across the GCC trust Tuitional for A Level Latin.

My daughter was struggling with Virgil's set texts and losing marks on unseen translation. After six weeks with her Tuitional Latin tutor, her confidence transformed completely. She sat her mock with a clear head and came out smiling. Genuinely worth every session.

Your questions answered

OCR A Level Latin tutoring: your questions answered.

The things parents and students ask us most, in plain language.

?Do your tutors actually know the OCR A Level Latin syllabus?+

Yes. Every tutor is matched to the specific OCR syllabus your child's school follows. They work from the correct set texts, past papers, and mark schemes so lessons align precisely with what will appear in the examination.

?Can we start mid-year if my child is already in Year 13?+

Absolutely. Many families join mid-year, particularly after a disappointing mock result. The tutor will assess where your child stands, prioritise the highest-value topics, and build a focused plan for the remaining weeks before the May/June sitting.

?Are sessions recorded if my child wants to review them?+

Yes. Every session is recorded and accessible to the student at any time through the platform. This is particularly useful for reviewing a tricky translation or re-reading the tutor's notes on a literary commentary point before the exam.

?What OCR Latin papers does the tutor prepare students for?+

Tutors cover all components of the OCR A Level Latin specification, including the unseen translation paper, set text prose and verse papers, and the prose composition or language paper, depending on which route your school follows.

?We move countries regularly. Can we keep the same tutor?+

Yes. Because sessions are online, your child keeps the same tutor regardless of which GCC country or city your family is in. The schedule adjusts to your new time zone and sessions continue without any gap in learning.

?How much does OCR A Level Latin tutoring cost?+

A Level tutoring is priced from AED 65 per hour. Pay per session, or buy a package with no lock-in and the option to cancel at any time. Full details are on our tutoring packages page.
