Pearson Edexcel GCSE Art and Design is a two-year qualification covering drawing, mixed media, photography, fine art and design. It combines a personal portfolio with a written component, making it one of the most practical GCSE pathways available.
The qualification is graded 9 to 1. Sixty per cent comes from the portfolio coursework component and forty per cent from the externally set assignment, which includes a supervised making period. Strong technique and annotation both contribute to the final mark.
The externally set assignment is released in January of Year 11. Students have ten hours of supervised time, typically taken in the spring exam series. Portfolio work is submitted ahead of the supervised period, so preparation across both years is essential.
