About this qualification

Cambridge AS Level History: what parents should know.

Cambridge AS Level History is a standalone qualification set by Cambridge Assessment International Education. It suits students aged 16 to 17 who want rigorous historical analysis and a strong foundation for A2 or university study.

What it is

Cambridge AS Level History is the first half of the Cambridge A-Level pathway. Students choose from a range of historical periods and regions, developing skills in source evaluation, essay writing, and historical argument through a defined CAIE syllabus.

How it is graded

The qualification is graded A to E. Assessment is entirely examination-based, with no coursework component at AS Level. Students sit two papers testing source-based skills and extended historical writing, each marked against a detailed CAIE mark scheme.

When exams happen

Cambridge AS History exams are offered in the May/June and October/November series. Most GCC school students sit the May/June series, so effective preparation typically begins six to nine months before the exam session.

Why one-to-one

A group class can't do this.

Lessons built around the gaps

Your child's tutor identifies exactly which topics, periods, or source skills are holding the grade back and targets every session there.

Real past-paper technique

Students practise timed CAIE past-paper questions and learn how to apply the mark scheme to maximise marks on source analysis and essay responses.

Parents kept in the loop

After every session, parents receive a progress note covering what was covered, what improved, and what the next session will address.

What is Cambridge AS Level History?

The qualification that builds real historical thinking.

Cambridge AS Level History is set by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE). It is designed for students aged 16 to 17 and covers a range of historical periods, themes, and regions selected from the CAIE syllabus.

Assessment is by written examination only, graded A to E. Students sit two papers covering source evaluation and extended essay writing. Results from the AS Level can count towards a full Cambridge A-Level grade when combined with A2 papers.

Every Tuitional lesson is mapped to the student's specific CAIE History syllabus code, so tuition stays aligned with the exact topics, sources, and question styles that appear in their papers.

Inside a lesson

What a one-to-one AS History lesson actually looks like.

Every session follows a four-phase structure: recap, teach, apply, review. The tutor adapts the pace to your child's needs, not a fixed class plan.

Book a trial lesson

A typical 60-minute session

  1. 0-5 min

    Recap and quick diagnostic

The tutor opens with two or three quick questions to check recall from the previous session and identify any gaps before moving forward.

Example: The student recalls the key causes of the First World War from the previous session; the tutor spots that alliance systems need more detail.

  2. 5-25 min

    Teach the target topic

The tutor explains the new concept clearly, uses timeline diagrams or annotated source extracts, and checks understanding at each step before moving on.

Example: Teaching the significance of the July Crisis 1914, using a CAIE source extract and walking through how to identify cross-referencing evidence.

  3. 25-50 min

    Apply it to past-paper questions

The student attempts a real CAIE past-paper question under timed conditions. The tutor then marks it live against the official mark scheme and gives targeted feedback.

Example: Attempting a Paper 1 source-based question from a recent May/June series, focusing on how to structure a 'cross-reference and evaluate' answer.

  4. 50-60 min

    Review, set homework, report

The tutor summarises what improved, sets a focused homework task, and logs session notes that are sent to the parent immediately after the lesson.

Example: Homework set to write a timed 20-mark essay on the extent of German responsibility for the First World War, ready to review next session.

After the lesson

You receive a parent report covering what was taught, how your child performed and what comes next โ€” and homework is set in the portal with a due date before the next session.

Parent Feedback

Why families across the GCC trust Tuitional for AS History.

My son was really struggling with source analysis in his Cambridge AS History papers. His Tuitional tutor broke down the mark scheme in a way his school never had. Within six weeks his Paper 1 scores jumped by two full grade boundaries. We could not be more pleased.

I used to dread essay questions in AS History. My tutor showed me a clear structure for argument-led answers and we practised past papers every session. My confidence going into the exam was completely different.

Booking was simple and the scheduling is very flexible. My daughter's tutor rescheduled around her school exam week with no fuss at all. The improvement in her written analysis has been noticeable.

Common questions

Cambridge AS History tutoring โ€” your questions, answered.

The things parents and students ask us most, in plain language.

?How does one-to-one tutoring help with Cambridge AS History?+

One-to-one tutoring focuses entirely on your child's weaker areas. A specialist tutor works through the exact CAIE syllabus topics your child finds difficult, practises past-paper questions with them, and gives personalised feedback on essay and source-analysis technique. No time is spent on topics they already know.

?Which Cambridge AS History syllabus does the tutor follow?+

Tutors work from your child's specific CAIE AS History syllabus code. At the start of the first session, the tutor confirms the syllabus, the option topics chosen, and the exam series the student is targeting, then plans all sessions around those exact requirements.

?How much does Cambridge AS History tutoring cost?+

Tuitional's AS Level and A-Level tutoring starts from AED 65 per hour. You can pay per session or choose a package with no lock-in. Full details are on our tutoring packages page.

?Can my child start tutoring close to the exam?+

Yes. Tutors can work in intensive exam-prep mode, focusing entirely on past papers, mark-scheme technique, and high-priority topics. Starting earlier gives more time for deeper understanding, but focused support in the final weeks before the exam series is still very effective.

?Are the sessions recorded so my child can review them?+

Every session is recorded and made available to the student for review at any time. Students also receive detailed notes, lesson plans, and resources after each lesson, so nothing from the session is lost.

?What if the tutor isn't the right fit for my child?+

Tuitional offers a free re-match if the first tutor pairing doesn't feel right. Our AI-powered matching engine selects tutors based on your child's learning style and the specific syllabus, but if the fit isn't there, we'll arrange a new match at no extra cost.
